It’s a new year, and this is our first Stamp & Show challenge of 2013! So what shall we do? Well, I’m thinking we kick it old school! Let’s embrace the old, the classics, the stuff that maybe has been forgotten due to all the lovely new goodies out there now.
Create something with an old favorite technique, share a project made with a favorite supply that has been around a long time, or craft something that looks truly old. However you take this challenge - we look forward to seeing what oldies but goodies you’re using and how.
I may use my antique linen distress ink (a favorite since 2004!), try a technique I’venot played with for years, or maybe I’ll dig out some super old photos to scrapbook. What will you do?
As soon as I saw our theme this week I new I wanted to pay homage to the old movies, those classics that I love watching on a Sunday afternoon especially at this time of year when it's cold and dark outside, a perfect opportunity to embrace those old classic movies. What better way to do that than with the Picture Star stamp plate from Artistic Outpost. This stamp set just takes me back to the classic Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers era; now I am showing my age. Brushed corduroy and walnut stain Distress Inks give my piece that old vintage feel. Creating this piece made me feel extremely nostalgic.
This week's challenge was the perfect excuse for Ashli to take a trip down memory lane and flip through some old family photos.
I love scrapbooking old family photos. Thankfully, I have been given bookshelves full of my relative's pictures. As I flipped through my collection, this old Polaroid of my Grandma with her prize catch really caught my eye. After all, there is quite a story that goes along with this photo and I couldn't wait to get it scrapped! Once I had selected some October Afternoon Woodland Park Paper, I found the perfect sheet of Echo Park Sweet Day to cut some clouds out of. Once cut, my clouds needed a little something special. Gold Embossing to the rescue! After placing my Polaroid on some Basic Grey Lucille Paper, some Glitz Washi Tape completed the look. Grandma Went Fishin'... and I told the story!
Trace loves to mix the old with the new.
This challenge sent me searching the deep dark crevices of my craft room. I tend to put all my new product up close on my desk, and just neglect almost anything that came before it! For this challenge I just couldn't use "old" product, so I mixed a few "oldies" like my Spellbinders Lacey Circles and my Plumeria 6X6 Paper Pack with a few "newbies" like my Delicate Dahlia Die, Dahlia Butterfly Die, and this fabulous Simon Says Stamp Sayings with Banner Stamp and Die set. So this challenge was just what I needed to help me relieve some of the quilt that I feel for not using all my accumulating older product!
Making stuff look old and used is something that Sandra Mouwen really enjoys doing.
I like all kinds of techniques to make things look old and used, such as distressing, grunging it up, time worn techniques and so on. I'm always searching for techniques to achieve different kind of old looks. For this project I've used an empty cigar box and made it look like it was made out of really old metal. To get the texture on the box, I've cut up some Neenah Solar White cardstock, made a patchwork and glued it down with Glue n' Seal Matte. I added more texture with Black Soot Distress Embossing Powder and glued down some Sprocket Gears.
This challenge was a perfect way for Candy to use products that were new but she'd had laying around for a while to create this shabby chic, vintage shadowbox.
I had a small Configurations Box that seemed to jump up and scream, "Pick Me!" as I was looking through all of my Tim Holtz products in anticipation of this challenge. I get a real kick out of taking something new and transforming it into something that looks like it could have been my Grandmother's. Mica Flakes and Crushed Glass Glitter easily transform something into vintage. Of course, Tim Holtz' Baubles, Ornate Plate, Curio Knob, Word Key; well, ALL of his Ideaology pieces are perfectly sized and suited for small vintage work!
Anna-Karin loves old things and has had a project featuring vintage vehicles in her mind for a while:
I love these vintage train, ship and car stamp sets by Tim Holtz and wanted to do a piece showcasing them. My wall-hanging is inspired by old post cards and the large Folded Paper Background stamp was a perfect frame for the cards. Manila cardstock colored with Distress Stains forms the base and layers of stamping in different inks was added on top. The three post cards hang together with Sprocket Gears and jump rings and a word band was attached to each panel with brads.
Terry loves hearts and was thinking of old hearts, so she made a heart frame wall hanging.
Since I just love hearts I just had to get crafty with this fabulous wall hanging. The one at the bottom is made out of steel and reed and I worked on the reed with Antique Bronze to give it that old look. The heart on the top is worked on with Tissue Tape and Antique Bronze and on top I played around with the Crackle Paint. The small roses are dipped into the Ranger Emboss Ink and Utee to give it that older look. To finish the wall hanging I placed a few buttons on the edge. The fabby girl image in the frame is dipped into the Distress Stickles Clear Rock Candy to give it a shiny look.
Sarah was looking back through her blog and the very first things she created.
My first step into blogging and inkiness (many moons ago) started with a vintage triple tag so I thought it would be fun to go back to that style and design for this week's challenge. I dabble in lots of styles nowadays, but originally I started out with lots of old world themes, but especially in those which echo the Victorian and antique look. I thought these three stamps of a lady, gent and young boy from Paper Artsy would be perfect to create a nostalgic mood. The background aged tones of blues and browns have been created with Distress Inks and a few Chit Chat words tell the beginning of a story from long ago...
Suzz was thinking of something old and something new to celebrate the old and new year.
I decided Vintage Valentine decorations would be a fun way to mix old and new. I used the beautiful Maya Road Heart Tart Tins and some of my favorite Artistic Outpost stamps (old and new) to fill my tin hearts. I have had the Beyond the Sea, plate for a couple of years and I love how the gentlemen has his arm around the lady. The Think and Wonder children are holding hands with sibling love and the elegant lady from Picture Star is awaiting her gentleman caller. I think these decorations will look lovely on a few bare branches in a vase for Valentines Day.
Dan combined images of old theatre tickets and old travel ads for this card.
A friend of mine is going on vacation to New York soon for her birthday and plans to take in some Broadway shows while she's there. so it seemed appropriate to combine a ticket and travel theme for her birthday card. I think it's kind of a shame that theatre tickets don't still look like this, they make nicer souvenirs than modern computer-printed tickets. I used the "enjoy the journey" phrase from the Going Somewhere stamp set as a substitute for "Bon Voyage" and the tickets themselves came from the Classic Collages set. The background is from the Destinations paper stash and I knocked the colour back a little with some gesso before stamping the sentiment. Keep this card to yourselves, I don't want her to see it before her birthday!
Finally, I (May) enjoyed mixing some old and new favorites from my Jenni Bowlin stash!
My long time favorite Jenni Bowlin foam stamp is the cool damask flourish, and I played with it on book paper (old book paper, of course) as well as some 'old school' edging, stitching, and a few long time favorite techniques as well as some new products like the wheat stamp too. Nothing like a new year and a fresh crafting start!
I encourage you to check out each of the design team member's blogs for more photos, supply lists, and more. Simply click on their name (above the photo of their project) to visit their blog.
Now that we've shared the team creations - we're ready to see yours! As always, Simon Says Stamp is giving away a $50 gift voucher that will go to a random entry chosen by Random Generator. The challenge will close at 11:59pm Eastern time on Sunday, January 12th and and the winner will be announced during the following week. To qualify all you need to do is create a new project that ties in (in any way!) with our theme and post it, along with a link back to this challenge, and add a link here.

Wonderful DT Embrace the Old creations. I made a New Year's resolution this yr to not buy any new paper stacks and use up the old stash I have like the pastel green cardstock I used for base on 1dst entry and the DCWV Once Upon A Time scrapbook paper that I used as base for scrapbook layout on 2nd entry.
