Challenge: Quotable

From your favorite movie lines to a sentiment on a stamp you keep meaning to use more, an inspirational quote to something a family member is always saying - this week we challenge you to use a quote in your craft project! It could be funny or heartfelt, serious or silly, long or short. Whether you are inspired to make a card or an inspirational canvas or anything in between - we invite you to join the challenge this week.

Our design team was inspired in many ways, and from a wide variety of sources.

Anna-Karin loves using quotes in her projects and what better place for them than on the cover of an altered notebook.
I made an altered notebook as a gift to a friend, featuring two of my favourite quotes from Tim Holtz products, one being a stamp and the other a die cut. The two fit well together, and even more so in combination with the Vintage Globe. I love the new Cameo Frame die and used it to die cut a focal panel from red kraft-core cardstock. The Sized Ovals dies fit perfectly inside so you can cut out a window, and I was happy to discover that the Book Covers texture fades also coordinates with the die. The book was covered in tissue wrap and painted to give it a worn and travelled appearance. I know my friend is going to love the little detail of the woman standing on top of the world.

One simple sentence was Candy's inspiration for this lovely vintage style card.
"Live your beliefs and you can turn the world around." What a beautiful sentiment from Artistic Outposts' Typography stamp set and it inspired me to create this vintage style card.  In keeping with the idea of global peace, I decided to use the beautiful map images of 7 Gypsies Global 8x8 paper pad as my background.  The Mini Baroque cut from Grungeboard, perfectly showcases the sentiment embossed with Black Embossing Powder.  Sharing the card front is Tim Holtz' Mini Vintage Globe colorized with Dylusions London Blue and Vibrant Turquoise Ink Sprays. The continents are given realistic terrain from Wendy Vecchi's White Embossing Paste that has been colored with Vintage Photo and Gathered Twigs Distress Inks.

I (May) was moved by a quote I heard on the TV show Heroes.
This Tim Holtz gentleman seemed the perfect choice for this small mixed media canvas piece. I wanted to play with color and really make it a grungy mess, while at the same time I wanted to make our gentleman advisor more crisp and clean looking. After all - he is advising a hero in training and needs to look the part. I love how the piece turned out - and that I now have a canvas hanging on my wall inspiring me to continue on my journey, and keep up the hard work!

Trace tries to live her life by this famous quote.
I just LOVE this saying by Abraham Lincoln! It is such a good reminder to live for today and enjoy it to the fullest! I used my Copics on Neenah paper to create the quote banner, and then glued it down with Studio Multi-Medium Matte. Playing with my Dylusions Art Journal, my Dylusions stencils, and Dylusions Ink Sprays sure makes me happy; and being happy I am sure adds years to one's life!

Ashli's welcomed the opportunity to scrap this amusing phrase that her father always says.
"Wherever You Go, There You are..." So silly, yet so true! My dad has always said this and we still say it to this day. He says he heard it once from a comedian, but to me, it is his. This week's theme was the perfect excuse to scrap this phrase along with this sweet picture of him and my daughter. After fussy cutting some Studio Calico map paper, I simply layered up some SMASH and Dear Lizzy elements. Then, I doodled the quote over and over again for some texture before adding my favorite Thickers to make up this quote.

Sarah was asked to create a piece to celebrate a friend's 40th wedding anniversary this week.
"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...." This is an all time favourite poem of mine and it was just perfect for the theme of my printer's tray. Every box is filled with a little something that reflects the years of love and commitment in a marriage. I went to town with Idea-ology, Tall Text stamping and Chit Chat words to create a keepsake that will hopefully give my friends a reminder of their love for many years to come.

If you ever find a magazine or newspaper with a part cut out of it or even a whole page torn from it, chances are Anita was the culprit. She is an avid quote collector.
I love quotes, heart felt sayings, thought provoking phrases, and stamp sets that contain them. That is a big reason why I love Wendy Vecchi's stamp sets from Stamper's Anonymous. Not only do they have great images, but they always contain great phrases or quotes, and I thought this one from her new Sunshine & Art set was perfect to celebrate the delights of the awakenings of the Spring Season on this canvas. Her Embossing Paste made her Stenciled For Art Wildflower extra special as well. I used the delicious Distress Paint in a variety of different ways on this canvas, and I love the results.

Sandra Mouwen loves to experience new things, like learning this technique.
It's such a true saying from Aldous Huxley. You need to think and act on what happens to and with you. Life is a really great gift and we need to embrace the chance we get with it. I used a small 4 x 4 canvas for my project. I added lots of texture, with Tim Holtz Trimmings and Ball Chain, and with Modeling Paste and the Punchinella Stencil. I adhered everything with Multi Medium Matte and covered it all in Gesso when it was dry. Then it was time for the fun part, spraying with the Color Wash Sprays to give it some color.

Suzz selected one of her favorite quotes from Emily Dickinson as her inspiration this week.
Emily Dickinson is one of my favorite poets. I love this quote from her and am pleased that is part of the Artistic Outpost Quote and Quotables plate.  I needed a bird and a nest to go along with one of my favorite quotes.  I created a beautiful nest of flowers using the Prima flowers.  The Graphic 45 Secret Garden papers created my background and my bird.

This week Dan was inspired by one of his favourite quotes about art.
I had a couple of quotes about art bouncing around in my head this week and I ended up going for "Art does not have to be pretty", one of my favourites.  I'll keep the other quote to myself for now, you never know, it might pop up on my blog in another piece some time soon!  This started out as a cheap mirror, basically an 11x11 piece of white wood with a 4" mirror tile in the centre.  Needless to say, I've drawn on several stamps and stamp sets for this piece, including Wendy Vecchi's Kiss Me, Dy Reaveley's Around the Edge, Dina Wakley's Grungy Silhouette and Tim Holtz's Royal Script, Countdown and for the quote lettering, the Remnants set.

Tracy has been inspired by birds this week to create a nature inspired card.
I love March, it's the start of the gardening season for me, I love my garden and everything that entails, including the wildlife, and birds are a must in my garden and I encourage them to visit as much as possible, a garden is not complete without birds. The Birds Of A Feather stamp set from Artistic Outpost was the perfect starting point for me, a beautiful image and perfect for stamping onto calico. The quote I used is one of my all time favourites from the Quotes and Quotables stamp sets from Artistic Outpost and perfect for my focal image. I wanted a real natural feel to this card and I think the muted tones showcase that beautifully.

Challenge: Water

March can often be a very wet month here where I live, rain pouring down regularly and so I thought - why not talk water this week in the challenge? You could literally use water (perhaps with some distress products for a cool effect!) on your project, you could use watercolor paper, watercolor pens, perhaps a water brush with some distress markers, or use water and paint to mix your own color wash. Not feeling the water? You could use a watery shade of blue! Or how about something with an ocean or tropical inspiration? Perhaps put a scrapbook together with those Caribbean photos, or decorate a frame to give to your friend just back from a cruise.

However you envision this week's theme, we can't wait to see what you come up with. Want more inspiration? Check out what the team came up with-

Sandra Mouwen had so much fun spraying lots of color on watercolor paper and watch the blending magic happen.

I get all messy (yet again) playing with Vibrant Turquoise and Lemon Zest Dylusion Sprays on some Water Color Paper with the Bubbles Template. It's a kind of magic how the colors all blend together so very well, especially on water color paper. They're so very vibrant. In the back I stamped the Script and Grid stamp with Chrome Yellow and Aquamarine Archival Ink. On top the amazing City and Clock stamps.

It had to be the Umbrella Man Die for Tracy this week to create a wonderful dimensional piece of art.
This is one die I have actually never used and thought it was about time to correct that situation and the water challenge seemed the perfect opportunity. Metal Foil Tape has been textured using the Riveted Metal Texture Fade to add a little more interest to the umbrella. Wendy Vecchi's White Embossing Paste adds the all important texture to the background and Glossy Accents give me my water droplets. I don't think I have ever danced in the rain, maybe I should try!

I (May) love making cards with this stamp and my favorite water reactive products.
I am trying to use my gelato set more, and I thought this week's challenge was the perfect opportunity! Mixed with water the gelato colors are so soft and lovely, and this stamp is definitely one of my favorites to sit and color. With a squirt of perfect pearls mist and a bit of paper distressed (and torn while wet with water!) this card came together exactly how I envisioned it. This challenge reminds me that with the right products water can be a most excellent tool in my crafting stash.

Our "water" theme this week gave Candy the perfect opportunity to play with her new Dylusions stamp sets to create this underwater adventure.
Dyan Reaveley's new Under The Sea, Ocean Backgrounds, Monster Mash and umbrellas from Ruby Rainbow were THE PERFECT stamps to create this wacky underwater adventure. Fish swimming upside down, a jellyfish in a dunce cap, an octopus holding an umbrella and a monster in galoshes; certainly proves Dyan's sentiment "I am exhausted by how everyone is getting stupid!" I tried to capture the crystal clear blues and greens of a Caribbean ocean with Dyan's Dylusions Ink Sprays.  Coloring the characters stamped onto Specialty Stamping Paper was a snap with my Tim Holtz Detailer Water Brush and more of Dyan's bright Dylusions Ink Sprays.

Trace used three different water techniques on her tag!
This tag was so much fun to create! What I love about using water as a technique, is that there is no perfectly planned result. In order to use the water techniques, I grabbed my Ranger Mister and add a few tiny scoops of  Perfect Pearls powder; and then filled it up with water and gave it a good shake. I use this mixture on everything, and for this tag the products I used with my mister included the Studio Calico Bubbles Mask, Tim Holtz Distress Markers and Tim Holtz Crinkle Ribbon. For each product I used a different "magical" water technique!

Dyan Reaveley came out with delightfully cute and whimsical new stamps this winter which were perfect for this watery theme, and Anita just had to use them.
If you knew my Messy Marvin (Or should I say Malcom?) nine year old son, you would understand my love for Dyan's new quirky monster and sea images. They reminded me of him so much I had to use them to make him a little present. I took apart an old tumbler of mine and made it new again to give to my son. Using vellum as my base, I stamped in Jet Black Archival, Dyan's watery images from Under the Sea and Ocean Backgrounds. I colored the images in using her Dylusions Ink Sprays, and the water is her new Calypso Teal. I had to alter Malcom some. Can you figure out what I did?

Sarah splashed around with water, Distress Stains and words to create her feel-good tag.
Whilst I'm not so bothered about the real ones, I love flowers in all their crafty forms so when I started on this project I thought a field full of daisies with a dramatic inky background would work well together... I'm not someone who does a lot with die cut pieces but when I saw the Simon Says Fresh Daisies I could see my tag blooming before my very eyes! My background uses a lot of the more vibrant Distress Stains which I have let bleed and run by spritzing with a Mini Mister, then I added a little extra contrast by stamping Tim Dots in white paint. My inky, creative time is hard to find these days but it is always good therapy and that was the inspiration behind my stamped sentiment. Don't let your inky soul go dry.

Ashli's was excited to use one of her favorite watercolor techniques this week to create her own bokeh style print.
Watercolors are one of my favorite mediums to work with. And, one of my favorite techniques of stenciling on an acrylic resist and then painting watercolors over it, was perfect for the look I wanted to create this week! I am loving the bokeh trend right now and I think that the gorgeous softness of watercolor paints will help me achieve a little lens-flare action of my own. After stenciling on my resist, I just went to town with my watercolors, making sure to use ample amounts of water to create the softness. A little Chipboard accent from My Mind's Eye and some die cut alphas from Tim Holtz pull the page together. A finishing touch of journaling around the border and Fantasyland is all scrapped.

Suzz decided to try a new water-based technique and was really pleased with the results:
The bright happy colors of the background made me think of Easter eggs and springtime.  I made a beautiful set of Spring Themed Arches.  To create the arches I used  the  Poppy Stamps - Gothic Window Die and die cut out a series of frames from the background papers.  To go with the spring theme I used the  sweet Stampendous Feather Bonnet Baby and Stampendous Floral Bonnet Baby stamps.  I added the flowers from the Stampers Anonymous - Spring Sprung in the background.  I am participating in a swap of Easter Arches and can't wait to share mine.

Playing with water and ink to create watercolour effects is one of Anna-Karin's favourite things to do.
I had fun making a layout using different water and ink techniques. For the background, I rinsed a sheet of watercolor paper in water, before misting it just twice with Dylusions mist, creating a soft effect, almost of rings spreading on water. The Darkroom Door trees and Tim Holtz bird and rays were stamped with the brush-less watercolor technique. The Sizzix bird and globe were watercolored with Distress Inks, as was the little bird made using a Martha Stewart clay kit. There is no rain coming from the clouds, since the photo was taken on a perfect bright and sunny day.

Dan used a few watery techniques and products to create his tale of two hearts.
In my exploration of warm- and cold-heartedness I misted with water, painted with watered-down gesso and painted neat distress stain with a water brush, so I think I have the whole watery thing pretty much covered here.  The hand uses a favourite technique of mine that I've always called the painted mask technique - I stamped the hand on top of the coloured background, painted over it with watered down gesso and then restamped on top of the paint.  I've never seen anyone else doing this so maybe everyone else doesn't rate it much as a technique, but I like it so I'll keep on doing it!  I used the From the Heart and Oddities stamp sets in addition to Claudine's gesso and a range of colours of distress stains.

I have so many ideas brewing in my mind, this week truly is full of possibility. Be sure to click on our design team's blog links so you can see more photos (and full supply lists) for their projects.

Challenge: Chic to be Shabby

From lace to doilies, adding a bit of a shabby touch with some brown ink around the edges or adding a bit of pearls to that vintage creation, this week we’re thinking shabby chic. Now, if this style is normally too feminine or frilly for you, we challenge you to take just one element that is often considered shabby chic and try to incorporate that. You’re also welcome to focus on the ‘chic’ or just the ‘shabby’ part in this challenge too. From brown inks to a soft trims and vintage findings – we hope you’ll join in and create this week.

Sarah decided to play with a touch of both the shabby and chic with her textured, romantic card.
Who says you need to wait for Valentine's Day each year to show some love? For me, shabby without a doubt has to involve a bit of Vintage Photo Distress ink, a few torn edges and a sprinkling of lacy stuff! I was also really eager to play with my fabulous Simon Says Plenty of Hearts Stamp and Die Set!!! I thought I would give these chic hearts a bit of a shabby look by cutting and stamping on Grunge Paper. Whilst fooling around with all the torn layers I was trying to think of a good sentiment and suddenly this famous song title by The Beatles popped in my head so I used my great versatile Kelly Purkey alphabet letters to add the wording! What song makes you think of luuuurve?

Tracy created a framed silhouette to showcase her interpretation of a shabby chic style piece.
This challenge encouraged me to get in touch with my feminine side and the lace background from Wendy Vecchi's Sentimental Art was the perfect backdrop for the silhouette from Tim Holtz Artful Silhouettes stamp set. Victorian Velvet Distress Ink was the perfect colour to add to the feminine feel of my piece adding into the mix a Fractured Doll
for a quirky touch. I have to say I consumed many jelly beans in the making of this piece as I had to keep walking away and coming back before working on the next piece, so lots of break times always mean a little snack which in this case was jelly beans.

Trace was inspired by her dear friends wardrobe at her annual girls scrap.
My friend Donna's attire was totally my inspiration for this card. She was wearing a pick turtleneck with a beige cardigan over top, wearing her brown eye glasses, and holding her white phone. So you can see how much influence she had on this card!  I knew I had the perfect chic shabby stamp with my Hero Arts Dot Flowered Pattern and it would look great stamped on Neenah Desert Storm paper in my new favorite white ink. It is Memories Unicorn White Pigment Ink, it is so white and has awesome coverage too! I love this idea of inspiration, and I will definitely do it again!

Candy created a trio of vintage shabby chic style post cards that are a little more chic and a little less shabby.
I love dimension.  I love coloring and cutting out images; almost like I'm playing with paper dolls.  Three ladies, three very different stories are depicted on these vintage shabby chic style post cards.   "LIFE IS GOOD" as the lady on the first post card poses atop Wendy Vecchi's new Heirloom Art background.  Darkroom Door's Frame Stamp from the first card ushers us into the next card full of Darkroom Door's Dressmaker images. The working girl seamstress dreams of being whisked away to far off lands.  Tim Holtz' train ticket in Going Somewhere coupled with his Carte Postale images embossed with Antiquities Rust Embossing Powder really give the feeling of an old rusted metallic travel postcard as the classy third lady waits her departure.

Sandra Mouwen can't stop playing with corrugated cardstock.
Don't know why, but I just can't stop using corrugated cardstock for my projects at the moment. Whether it's for the look or for function, I simply can't help myself. Besides that, I really think that it also is very shabby. Although you hardly can see it, I used a #12 Manila Tag as base and folded it in half and covered it with White Corrugated Cardstock. What is shabby chicness without some lace, ribbon and a bird cage? So I cut out some Vintage Lace from some Neenah Cardstock, used the Caged Bird die and colored some Crinkle Ribbon with Antique Linnen Stain.

Doilies mixed with lovely soft shades of pinks and browns... that is what comes to Ashli's mind when she thinks of shabby chic.
A Kraft base with some lovely Gold Lame misting and white stamping? YES! What a lovely way to get started with this week's challenge of creating in the Shabby Chic style! And, I couldn't resist putting my Simon Says Stamp Exclusive Dahlia Die to use to make all of my doilies. Aren't they pretty? After layering up all of that goodness, I simply embellished with some Crate Paper Chip Board Stickers and a few Dear Lizzy Die Cuts. A fun hand made Wire title completes the page and adds a little more sparkle for this Shabby Chic "Go Around."

Anita thinks pearls, lace, and roses, shadowed with a definite vintage feel, and heightened with a slight French flair thrown in for good measure, is what makes up the Shabby Chic look.
I definitely channeled my inner Madame du Create for this 8x10 inch frame that was previously in shambles before I decided to fix it up. I love to combine scrapbooking with home decor. It is always out for everyone to see and enjoy that way, and the Art actually means something special. After I repaired the frame, it got a little paint from Ranger Paint Dabbers, and then was stamped with Tim's Christmas Music and Script images, which can be used anytime of year. The four quadrants are Wendy's Art Parts that are papered and inked, and filled with Prima Rose Parchment Vine and Idea-ology Facets and tons more embellishment.

What is more chic than a doily? Not much! This week I (May) prepare for Easter in style.
What could be better than a pastel Easter tag to get me in the springtime mood? How about one that utilizes the new dylusions sprays with some white wash to downplay the vivid bright colors. I love how this bunny stamp colored with my watercolor pencils looks good enough to eat. Mixing shabby with chic, brown ink and whitewash with bolder colors, I love the results!

This week Dan took the opportunity to try out some of the exclusive Simon Says Stamp dies and stamps.
Those of you who are familiar with my style probably know that me and Shabby Chic are not a natural match-up, but after all, this is a challenge blog so I'm up for the challenge!  I decided to go with the classic pink and brown colour scheme and also tried out some of the Simon Says Stamp dies and stamps I've recently added to my stash.  Although I've owned a cuttlebug for years, I've never actually owned or with a die, so this was a bit of a revelation for me, so quick, easy and clean.  I used the SSS exclusive dies Ribbon Banner and the Apothecary Labels dies and stamps set, in addition to the Destinations paper stash.

Anna-Karin made a pop-up card which is shabby chic inside and out:
When I hear 'shabby chic', I think of lace, buttons, pearls, pink and a whitewashed vintage look. I made a pop-up card using the fun Square Ornate 3-D Frame die, which is so easy to use. The background is whitewashed manila cardstock, on top of a clear embossed wallpaper stamp and I also added some stamping with paint. The frame was cut from Tim Holtz Crowded Attic paper, embellished with a Mini Silhouette die cut from natural sticky-back canvas and a Fancy Frame embossed with platinum powder. A layered vellum butterfly flutters above the frame, attached with a twisted wire.

Suzz  thinks of shabby chic and her desk is covered with flowers, lace, and soft pastel colors.
I had this beautiful Graphics 45 Altered Art Box that inspired me to create a keepsake box to hold wedding Mementos. I found soft pinks and greens in my  Authentique Festive and Authentique Lovely papers to cover the surfaces of my Wedding book. I pulled out a variety of the beautiful Prima Flowers to mist and coordinate with the colors on the papers. The frames on the front were perfect to showcase my vintage photos on the inside and out. The inside has the perfect places for additional photos and to store papers that were kept from the ceremony.

Now it is your turn! However you so choose to interpret our challenge - we can't wait to see your creations. Be sure to click on our design team's blog links so you can see more photos (and full supply lists) for their projects.
